Raj Amit Kumar, the director of the movie “Unfreedom” that was banned by the Indian Censor Board, is now campaigning for the complete abolition of the Censor Board and to bring about a new institution to rate the films according to “age”. “Unfreedom”, the movie explores various issues like religion, sexuality and terrorism.

The Censor Board was reportedly irked by the sexually explicit scenes between the film’s lead female characters.

In a petition that Raj Amit Kumar has started via the online platform Change.org, he says, “If there is one right that is most fundamental, it is our right to speak. No matter whom it offends and no matter who it insults. There is no freedom of speech and expression if there are restrictions to it. It is one freedom that should be absolute and worth dying for”

The petition has already garnered more than 1,700 votes. The director was reported as saying that he will keep sending these signed petitions to the Prime Minister and Censor Board, until there is a real change.

“Unfreedom” is the first feature film of the 37-year-old film maker, and he currently resides in Florida, USA.
