Unfreedom, the new Bollywood film made based on the story of a young girl resisting to get into a forced arranged marriage selected to spend life with her lesbian partner failed to cross the Censor Board. The topic of film is to explore homosexuality and the film failed to receive the nod from CBFC. There is also a story of liberal Muslim kidnapped by a terrorist runs in parallel to lesbian relationship. Unfreedom stars Adil Hussain and Victor Banerjee.
Censor Board Chief Pahlaj Nihalani was un-reactive to many pleas from many producers and directors requesting him to tone down the stringent norms including the list of cuss words banned. There are problems with lovemaking scenes in Unfreedom, a report said.
CBFC Examining Committee and Revising Committee stopped the film on claims of Hindu; Muslims will start fighting as Unfreedom will ignite unnatural passions. Director Raj Amit Kumar also appealed to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal for no use. He is now moving the High Court for release of film.
“My film challenges the idea of religious fundamentalism. It also questions the connection of this idea with homosexuality, a biting reality of India,” Raj Amit Kumar told.
