The story of a young girl who fights back against forced arranged marriage so as to spend her life with her lesbian partner, “Unfreedom” has failed to get approval from the Censor Board of India.
The film allegedly failed to get approval as it dealt with the topic of homosexuality.
Recently, Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani issued a list of cuss words, which had entailed a massive protest. Now, the Censor Board seems to object to nudity and lovemaking scenes in Unfreedom.
The movie also has a parallel story of a open-minded Muslim who is kidnapped by a terrorist. The film features stars Adil Hussain and Victor Banerjee among others.
According to the director Raj Amit Kumar the movie dares the notion of religious fundamentalism and queries its connection with homosexuality which is a bitter reality of India.
The director has even appealed to the Film Certification Apellate Tribunal but unsuccessfully. The director is now planning to make an appeal in the High Court.
For the moment, the Censor Board’s decision to ban the film has certainly come as a huge setback to the LGBT community.
