Excited by the encouraging attitude of the audience in IFFK, the director of Blemished Light , Raj Amit Kumar has decided to change the title of the film to Faces of Unfreedom . The film is based on Urdu poem Ye dagh dagh ujala by Faiz Ahamed Faiz that talks about the ‘unfreedom’ in society.
The film deals with the central theme of racial and gender discrimination. It also has something to say about homosexuality. “Homosexuality is not a problem, but a phenomena. The attitude of society to such ab issue depends greatly on its cultural variations,” he said.
The film also has a character who feels like a fish out of the water as he lives in America as a Muslim.
The director who has been living in the U.S. for the past few years has also commented about the differences in censoring films both in India and the U.S. In India it was rather difficult to release the movie as the censor board took an authoritarian stand owing to the ‘sensitive’ theme but it was easy to release the film in the U.S. Mr. Raj wanted the censor board to be little more lenient to promote independent films that dealt with socially relevant subjects.
