Central Board Of Film Certification Refuses To Certify Unfreedom

Unfreedom is a film that revolves around a Muslim fundamentalist in New York who kidnaps a liberal Muslim scholar with an intent to kill, while a closeted lesbian in New Delhi kidnaps her bisexual lover with the intent to love.

What follows is torture and violence that evokes a brutal struggle of identities against unfreedom.

The film is reportedly based on Faiz Ahmad Faiz’s poem, Ye Dagh Dagh Ujala.

The film stars Victor Banerjee, Adil Hussain, Bhanu Uday, Preeti Gupta, Bhavani Lee, Ankur Vikal, Seema Rahmani and Samrat Chakrabarti. The film has been directed by US based Raj Amit Kumar.

Preeti Gupta, remembered for her role in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii has done quite a few build scenes in the film.

The actor essays the tole of a lesbian girl Leela in the film that has been banned in India, but did get a release in America.

Before filming Unfreedom, Preeti spoke to many lesbian women. The one thing, which was difficult for them was the fact that there was no mainstream media that explored same sex relationships, so there were no references while they were growing up, making them feel like freaks, which they aren’t.

However, it’s sad that the Central Board of Film Certification has refused to certify the movie for public release.

Now if this was not enough, Unfreedom has had another controversy surrounding it as nude images and videos of actor Preeti Gupta form the film had been leaked online.

The videos and images feature her nude scenes and lesbian kissing scenes, which has been banned in India for its sexual content. Screenshots of the nude and kissing scenes have gone viral after being leaked. Oops!!

All said and done, we do hope to see this film get a release soon.

Here’s wishing team Unfreedom all the best and we go hope that they get freedom to release this one in India.
